March 25 marks the Independence Day of the Belarus People's Republic (BPR). On this day an independent Belarusian state was proclaimed, which was later dispersed by the Bolsheviks. Under the terms of the Riga Treaty of 1921, the Belarusian lands were divided between the USSR and Poland.
When Alexander Lukashenka came to power in 1994, persecution for celebrating this day began in the Republic of Belarus. Despite the permission of the authorities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the BNR near the Opera House in Minsk, repressions continued.
Mass repression intensified after the falsified "elections" in 2020, as a result of which hundreds of thousands of Belarusians were forced to leave the country. Abroad, they created their own communities and continue to organize actions in support of Belarus' independence.
