June 4, a 200-meter buffer zone will be restored on the Belarusian-Polish border. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Polish Defense Ministry Vladislav Kosiniak-Kamysh, reports Polskie Radio.
The government explains the decision to restore the zone by the need to “ensure better protection of the border and increase the safety of officers who guard it.”
The measure will affect Hajnowski and Bialystok districts (Podlaskie Voivodeship), the zone covers a total of 27 settlements. A temporary ban on staying in the border zone for three months will also come into force on June 4.
At the beginning of the migration crisis on the border in 2021-2022, Poland already introduced a buffer zone. At the same time, a temporary ban on staying in the border zone was also introduced. This was done after Lukashenka announced that “Belarus will no longer help Western countries to control illegal migration,” while in fact Lukashenka organized a whole business of ferrying illegals from the Middle East to Europe. Then, European politicians accused the Belarusian regime of a hybrid attack on the EU.
Earlier it became known that the Polish authorities plan to modernize the fence on the border with Belarus to combat migrants. They are going to spend 1.5 billion zlotys for this purpose, which is more than $370 million.
Polish Border Guard Service notes an increase in attempts of illegal border crossing by migrants from Belarus. May 31, Podlaskie branch of the Border Guard Service reported that more than 300 such attempts had been registered over the past two days. Two Polish soldiers were injured in a clash with border violators.
