Alexei Navalny found in remote siberian colony after disappearing for 20 Days
Details
Alexei Navalny has been located in correctional colony No. 3 in the settlement of Kharp, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, according to his press secretary Kira Yarmysh.
«His lawyer saw him today. Alexei is fine,» Yarmysh wrote.
Colony No. 3 in Kharp is notorious for its harsh detention conditions. It is situated in a remote area of Western Siberia, where winter temperatures can plummet to minus 50 degrees Celsius. Human rights activists have reported frequent incidents of violence, torture and humiliation by the administration and FSIN officers in the colony.
Alexei Navalny's whereabouts had been unknown for 20 days since he was transferred from the colony in the Vladimir region. There were speculations on the internet about his serious illness and even death.
As a reminder, in March 2022, Alexei Navalny was convicted of fraud and embezzlement of funds from the French cosmetics company "Yves Rocher", and then of insulting the judge, resulting in a nine-year sentence in a high-security colony. In August 2023, Alexei Navalny was sentenced to 19 more years in prison in a case of "extremism". Navalny was accused of creating and financing the extremist group "Anti-Corruption Foundation", as well as inciting extremism online.
