Mousavi was a major general and deputy commander of the IRGC's elite al-Quds unit, responsible for Iran's external operations. He was considered one of the closest associates of Gen. Qassem Suleimani, the commander of the al-Quds unit, who was killed in January 2020 in a US strike near Baghdad.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that Israel would pay for killing Mousavi, who held the rank of brigadier-general in the Guards.
