"The destruction of the Iranian consulate in Syria, which killed dozens of high-ranking Iranian officials and generals, risks escalating into a major war in the region. This is being reported by some media outlets in the Middle East, according to which the US intelligence agency CIA has warned Israel to expect a military response from Iran within 48 hours," the outlet reported.
According to the Al Mayadeen TV channel, Iran is preparing a combined attack involving massive drone and missile launches against Israel's strategic sites.
The Times of Israel writes that due to fears of "retaliation" for the strike on the Iranian mission in Syria, the Israel Defense Forces has begun mobilizing air defense reservists.
"The move follows Iran's threats to respond to Israel's likely assassination of Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the IRGC's top official in Syria, along with his deputy, five other IRGC officers and at least one Hezbollah member," the publication says.
In early April, Iran accused Israel of attacking its consulate in Syria. It resulted in the elimination of General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the Al-Quds unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Israel's spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, in a statement to reporters, declined to comment on the attack but pointed out that the facility "was neither a consulate nor an embassy." It was a Quds Force military installation disguised as a civilian building, he said.
