German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv with a delegation today. According to Bild correspondent Nadia Aswad, the delegation left towards the Black Sea to visit a desalination plant 50 kilometers from the front line. At the beginning of the war, the occupiers destroyed the water supply facilities in the city of Mykolaiv, causing the locals to face an acute shortage of drinking water.
On the way, a Russian reconnaissance drone approached the convoy of vehicles. This is usually followed by an aerial attack. The drivers tried to get away from the drone, but it continued to chase them. They eventually managed to break away, but the visit to the station was canceled. Shortly after the motorcade left, an air alert sounded in the Mykolayiv region.
The German Foreign Ministry officially confirmed that the Berbock visit had to be cut short for security reasons. ZDF journalists add that members of the delegation were offered to move into armored cars.
Annalena Baerbock began her official visit to Ukraine yesterday, on the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The German foreign minister arrived in Odesa from Moldova.
Together with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, she visited strategically important facilities in the port of Odesa. She also visited the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which was attacked by the occupiers last summer. The BBC reports that the minister was forced to spend the evening in a bomb shelter as an air alert was declared in the city.
