One of the targets of the strike was the Taneko oil refinery in Tatarstan. Consequently, the drone flew at least 1,300 kilometers from the front line.
A fire started at the Taneko oil refinery as a result of an impact. According to Reuters, one of the oil refining units caught fire. Sources in the industry said that the fire paralyzed the refinery, as the AVT-7 unit, responsible for half of the refinery's capacity and processing 21.7 thousand tons of oil per day, was shut down. Overall, the refinery produces about 6% of gasoline and almost 10% of diesel fuel in Russia.
"The Taneko refinery is one of the largest and newest in Russia. Its production capacity is about 360,000 barrels per day," Reuters writes.
The Taneko refinery is the first oil refinery to be built in the post-Soviet period. Last year, its production capacity processed 17 million tons of crude oil, making it the third largest in terms of output after Gazprom Neft's Omsk refinery and Surgutneftegaz's Kirishi refinery. As noted, the Kirishi refinery was attacked by a drone on March 12 but was not seriously damaged and continued its operations.
Ukraine is also reported to have attacked an assembly site for Iranian Shahed drones. The drones flew more than 1,200 kilometers from the border with Ukraine and hit Tatarstan. The region was chosen as a target because the Alabuga plant began producing kamikaze drones in 2023. They were used by Russians for strikes against Ukraine.
