The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on the evening of 13 May that Ukrainian forces had started pushing back Russian troops in the north of Volchansk.
Earlier, the AFU General Staff said that Russian troops had entered the northern outskirts of Volchansk in Kharkiv region.
“Our units... are carrying out clearing measures on the northern outskirts of the settlement of Volchansk,” the General Staff said in a summary.
At the same time, fighting began in the Staritsa area (a village west of Volchansk), where Russian units also broke through.
The AFU General Staff said that the Russian army does not stop trying to dislodge Ukrainian units from all positions they occupy, and also carries out airstrikes on the towns and settlements of Udy, Volchansk, Liptsy, Grafske and Veseloye.
“The enemy is trying to capture Volchansk, however, the Defense Forces are fighting back. Small arms battles continue on the northern outskirts of the city. Fighting also continues for Lukyantsy in the Lipetsk community. We fix a slight advance of enemy troops, however our fighters are fighting intensively to hold the settlement,” regional military administration head Oleg Sinegubov said.
“Over the past three days, Volchansk has suffered in a way it hasn't suffered since 2022 - the number of guided aerial bomb strikes is off the charts. In a sense, Volchansk is turning into Bakhmut or Maryinka,” Kharkiv region police chief Volodymyr Timoshko said in an interview with Kharkiv radio.
