Fewer Weapons: Germany wants to cut aid to Ukraine

Germany plans to reduce its contributions to the European Union’s $20 billion fund for arms transfers to Ukraine.

NEXTA reports with the link on The Telegraph.

In a secret «unofficial document» the representatives of Germany emphasize the need to take into account the billions of military assistance provided by the country to Ukraine on a bilateral basis by the European Peace Fund.

«Military support for Ukraine can be provided either through financial contributions to the Ukrainian Peace Fund or through direct supplies of military equipment to Ukraine,» the document says.

In Berlin, there is a view that direct arms transfers to Ukraine should be considered as a kind of contribution to the fund.

This document caused concern in European capitals, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz may create obstacles to future support for Ukraine.

According to the publication, Scholz assured colleagues from the EU of his commitment to financing Ukraine. However, he noted that the recent decision of the German Constitutional Court had created additional financial obligations that were difficult or even impossible to meet.

Another document studied by the publication points to France’s support for halting arms transfers through the European Peace Facility from EU member states' national stockpiles. France proposes to focus on "general procurement" from European arms manufacturers.

EU leaders will discuss the reform of the European Peace Facility at the upcoming summit in Brussels on December 14-15.

It is important to recall: that the German Defense Minister announced his intention to double military aid to Ukraine by 2024, reaching 8 billion euros.
