China decided to ignore the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, which is scheduled for June 15-16. At least three Reuters sources say Beijing decided to reject the invitation because conditions for participation were not met. Previously, China stated that among the conditions that Beijing demanded were recognition of the conference by both Russia and Ukraine, equal participation of all parties and an honest discussion of all proposals, writes Reuters.
In an interview with Nexta.tv, Ukrainian political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko warned that the participation of Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese Foreign Minister in the peace summit in Switzerland was not expected.
“Unfortunately, China’s position in the peace process is somewhat closer to Russia. China strives to remain neutral; it does not support Russia’s war against Ukraine, but it does not condemn this war either. If China does not participate in the peace summit, even as an observer, then it will undermine its position as a potential negotiator, as a potential mediator. Therefore, China needs to make a decision,” Fesenko said.
The United States believes that China is far from neutral, but rather helps Moscow in the war against Ukraine, and therefore Beijing may face subsequent sanctions in response from NATO countries. This was stated by US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.
“What we see in deliveries from China to Russia is not an isolated case or a couple of fraudulent companies involved in supporting the Russian Federation. This is a long-term, comprehensive effort, supported by the Chinese leadership and designed behind the scenes to provide all possible support to Russia,” Campbell said.
Let us remind you that on June 15 and 16, delegations from dozens of countries around the world will arrive in Switzerland for a summit where they are going to find ways to resolve the war in Ukraine. Invitations to participate in this conference were sent to representatives of 160 countries.
